Hope some of you can help. We're two couples, hoping to book a trip to the Red Sea in October to go diving. We're gonna get our PADI Open Water here so we can get as much diving in as possible. We both keep marine fish & corals and the reason for our trip is to see as many corals and fish as possible - even the odd shark or two would be nice! I was just wondering which location for our holiday would be better. We do want to spend a few days "non-diving" but obviously we're going for the marine life and want to make the most of the opportunity as possible as we don't have money to burn! We've looked at the Ras um Sid area of Sharm and also at the Fantazia holiday through Longwood holidays. Any advice would be much appreicated :-) Thanx!

Try one of the hotels in Sharm.
Ocean Bay or Ocean Club with Explorers are excellent. Ocean College dive centres are at both hotels. Good prices on courses too, dive packs are usually half price, and the diving is great!
Good night life in Sharm too.

just about the best corals and fish you'll get to see 'up north' is at ras mohammed. it's a marine reserve where boats cannot anchor. day boats from sharm will probably visit this site, whereas to the best of my knowledge, it's a little far for hurghada day boats!
i'm not sure if there are restrictions on diver cert level for visits to ras-mo. there is deep water there so good buoyancy control is an absolute must, not just to prevent you from descending into the depths but also to avoid you pinballing off those really nice corals.
not sure what else is available around sharm as we normally do liveaboards from hurghada or marsa alam.
out of hurghada, you have carless reef and the aquarium as the 2 sites that stand out as having better marine life.

i gotta agree with stevieboy, sharm is great, a bit of everything and the ocean college is ecellent. I did my OW course with them a couple of years ago and they were brilliant, very friendly and look after you. Great value for money and i would reccomend them. I have dived with them 4 times since and am going again in September.
